RISC OS Select / Adjust

The thing that makes RISC OS so appealing to schools is its indestructability. With the Operating System stored on ROM chips (a chip inside the machine, rather than files on the hard disc) it is secure from virus invasion and exporing little fingers!

When RISCOS Ltd. took over the development of RISC OS 4, however, they found they could make more rapid development of the system if they, like their competitors, released upgrades via CD ROM - ie software. This was known as RISC OS Select.

The thing about ROM is a biggy. In the schools this editor supports, the time required to address PC needs is relentless, while any RISC OS machines (from A3000 to Risc PC or RiscStation) simply require updates. Of course, all machines go wrong eventually, but if you don't have to worry about the Operating System, it certainly makes life simpler.

It's a bit like driving a car. You may need to replace the brakes or clutch from time to time, but the Dashboard, pedals and steering wheel should be taken for granted.

So this is where RISC OS Adjust comes in. In their wisdom (which, let's face it, is infinite) RISCOS Ltd. have taken all the RISC OS 4 updates from Select (plus a few more) and released them on ROM. This means that users of all RISC OS machines can once again take their dashboard for granted!
